My Genious Wife

Check out the feedback Caroline got on her Thesis first draft. Yeah...that's my wife!

"Caroline's inquiry is excellent. It is critically self-reflective, well organized, clearly written and presents best practices of teaching and learning. She paints a clear and powerful picture of her problem and her desires to address the difficult obstacles she faces teaching in the Newcomers Center. Her goal to differentiate content between grade levels in such a transient classroom is appropriate and socially just. The literature review of sociocultural theories provides a strong framework to understand the students, their social context and different pedagogical strategies. She writes a terrific summary of Vygotsky, Moll, Rogoff, Krashen and Cummins and connects their ideas to her students and her goals of this inquiry project. Caroline's methodology section is thorough and exhaustive as she describes her intervention with plenty of detail for anyone else to replicate. The analysis is deeply thoughtful. She triangulates data from her ethnographic notes, student reflections, LAA test scores, and focus group feedback. In the spirit of action research it was excellent to read how she adapted her intervention to best meet the needs of her students through changing the LAA testing method into a group activity that proved to more pedagogically sound. It is impressive to see Caroline's critical self-reflections about the limitations of her own teaching practices that were increasing student dependency and her discovery of ways to empower students to become more independent through teaching them collaborative strategies to work together and assigning them roles and responsibilities."

Blogging 101

Besides teaching English, Math, History and Science to my 6 - 8 graders, I also teach an elective class. Every three months I get a new set of students for this class. So far this year I have taught Graphic Design and Astronomy. Well, its the end of the year and let's be honest... nobody wants to learn about the universe at this point. I decided I'd try something different. Why not involve my students in the blog revolution? Everyone's doing it. I'm calling it "Blogging 101", only because I couldn't call it "Blogging for Dummies." I'm only kidding. Take a look at my new blog and my precious students here: Blogging 101.

Little Bloggers:

Where's Brian?

Oh... there he is. If you look closely, you might be able to see the hazy silhouette of a soldier. That's Brian in his new uniform. He used to wear camo that looked like this....

In my opinion, it's more attractive. But the Armed Forces didn't ask me. Brian is finally switching over to the new pattern. I'm sure it works wonders in desert combat, but unfortunately, in L.A., camoflague doesn't have the right effect. Still... I have to admit, that I secretly love to see Brian walk through the door wearing this.

No. 7 Graduates

I am at school this morning and while my students are quietly working (yeah right), I can't stop looking at this adorable picture of my baby brother Doug... all 6 foot 8 of him! Can you believe it?! I sure can't. Where did the time go? Isn't he so handsome? I am in love with him. He's graduating from High School today. I wish i could be there. Congratulations, Honkus!

Brian Regan...Awesome!

Caroline and I went to Brian Regan at the Wiltern and we had an awesome time!!! At one point I was laughing so hard that my face was twitching and I couldn't breathe. Maybe my face was twitching because of lack of oxygen or maybe it was because Brian Regan is just really funny.

Here is a link to one of his skits on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WUU9CqrtFiU
Check it out...you'll love it! And it is surprisingly clean.

Look how close we were at the Wiltern Theatre

Fieldtrip!

I recently took my little punks to the Good Samaritan Hospital a few blocks away from our downtown L.A. campus. I wanted to get them involved in the community, so one day I asked them what they thought we might be able to do to help. "Help?" they asked. "Yes, help. You know, like a service project?" Students: "Why would we want to do that?" I'll stop there. You can guess how the rest of the conversation went. They're in middle school!

However, after sufficiently brainwashing them, I got a lot of great ideas like, buy houses for the homeless, find a cure for cancer, get rid of the gangs in L.A., etc, etc. Great ideas kids, but maybe not this year. It's only my first year of teaching. Finally, a shy, quiet, precious little dear (I've only got one or two of that type) said, "maybe we could visit the sick?" Now you're talking. Something we could actually do in one day's work.

So a couple days later, with homemade "get-well-soon cards" in hand, we visited the rehab unit on the 6th floor (I only mention that because some of my students enjoyed the elevator ride most of all). We were met by friendly staff and many very grateful elderly patients. My naughty, naughty students transformed before my eyes as they talked to the patients with concern and gentleness. Look at those faces! Even the class tough guy who was not interested in "service" was a changed boy. He said, "Ms. Beus (the new name didn't stick w/ the kids), I can't give this card away." "Why not?" I asked. "Because I did a really sloppy job." Come again. Did I hear that right?! It's amazing what service can do for us. I'm sure proud of these kids!

Taco Soup - 4 nights straight & counting...

Remind me not to make such a big a pot next time. I'm going to be eating this stuff for days... I can usually count on my husband's favorite organ to take care of the left overs, but he's been at meetings or out of town all week and so I'm on my own this time. It reminds me of when I lived with Grandma Shirley. It was just the two of us, but bless her heart, she can't resist a bargain... even when it means eating ham in every way it was ever meant to be prepared until we can't take any more... sliced ham, fried ham, julienned ham, shredded ham, ham and eggs, ham sandwiches, ham & pea soup, ham quiche, ham bisquits... Okay, I may be exaggerating, but a ten pound ham can last quite a while!

Anyways, I shouldn't be complaining because this stuff sure is good! In fact, I think I'll share my favorite version of the recipe.

Taco Soup
1 lb. ground beef
3 14 oz cans diced tomatoes (try Hunt's fire roasted w/garlic - you'll be so glad you did)
1 can kidney beans
1 can pinto beans
1 small can diced green chiles (if you're a wimp like me) or jalepenos (if your name is Brian and you like things that are HOT!)
1 can corn
1 pkg taco seasoning
1 cup water (or until right consistency)

serve with:
sour cream (the BEST part)
cheese (the second BEST part)
tortilla chips

P.S. I love you Grandma!

New Couch!

For the last 4 months we've been sitting on this pathetic little couch that Brian bought used a long, long time ago. It doesn't look THAT bad, but don't let the picture fool you. What you can't see are the sweat stains from Brian's old room-mates (disgusting!), the bacteria growing just beneath the surface (who knows who owned it previously?!) or the spaghetti sauce stain from a few nights ago (I'm the guilty party this time). Here's Brian, looking just as pathetic as the couch.

The desperate nature of the situation called for desperate measures. Call me crazy, but this week I let my husband pick out and buy a couch with out having seen it myself! We've both been so busy that we don't have a lot of spare time to go furniture shopping together. On his lunch break, Brian found a sofa and loveseat that he liked for a good price so I told him to go for it. Well, here's what he came home with...

He looks happy hu?

I think he should be a cheerleader on Saturday Night Live.

Brian Regan in LA

Caroline and I got our tickets today to see Brian Regan live in Los Angeles on Saturday, May 03, 2008. Brian Regan is a hi-larious and very clean comedian. Check out his website here: http://www.brianregan.com/ Sorry Mike (Beus), we only got two tickets so you will have to bribe either Caroline or myself.

Final Four Baby!

March Madness is well under way. Caroline is whipping me in the NCAA Bracket Challenge on ESPN... but I, Brian "Block Party" Merrell, helped the Santa Monica 3rd Ward Silver Monkeys reach the Final Four in this season's two-stake basketball tourney. GO MONKIES!!! Unfortunately, we then lost to our rival singles ward, the Los Angeles 1st Ward Gators, in the semifinals.
